Final Music Video and Analysis

This is our Final Music Video. It has been fully edited now and it looks like what we were hoping for. The editing is loads better in what is now the final cut and the lip syncing is near perfect. We used a few transitions; the first of which is into-television transition at 14 secs, then we had a transition 1:53 (had to do that because the split screen didn't work as intended), then at 1:00 there was a transition going through the window, then there was another into the tv at 2:15, then there was another transition at 3:05 (this was the transition to go into the past), there is a fade to white transition at 3:27 and finally a fade to black at the end to then show the writing . We have re filmed some of the shots that were out of focus and added in the shots that needed to be filled in, we now hope that the music video will flow really well and make the narrative easier to follow.

We have received some feedback on our Final Music Video from target audience members, although this time it is for our Final Music Video, the positives and negatives of the Final Music Video are;

Positives:
  • Lip Syncing is right on point
  • Visuals and music work really well together
  • Really good variety of shots
  • Some really good and effective effects on the video
  • There is a good match on action
  • The Song choice is really good and catchy, think the music video goes well with it
  • Nice and clean transitions and cuts, some transitions go really well with song
  • Performance shots outside are great
  • Nice colour effects on argument at the end
  • Good zoom at start
  • Good OTS (Over the Shoulder)
Negatives:
  • TV should turn on
  • Speed up the flashback at the end
As you can now see, the positives massively outweigh the negatives, that is exactly what we were hoping for although it would have been nice to not get any negative comments but I think the negative comments that we got were pretty opinionated. We aimed to get rid off all of the negative comments by our final cut and we have all but 2 which I see as a huge success.

Final Locations

We decided our final locations and these were the ones that Jack took. This is because the whole area fits our storyboard the best and we wouldn't have to worry about to many jumps between locations on shots that are supposed to match up. With the complex narrative having jumps between locations on shots that are supposed to match up would present a problem as the narrative would of been harder to follow. Also having jumps between locations on shots that are supposed to match up would hinder us when editing this is because it would be very time consuming trying to find a way of making the visuals flow.

Also the locations that Jack showed us fitted the feel for the music video the best as it had lots of open space where we could potentially be more cleaver with the mise en scene as it would give us more space to set up what was going in the frame for the shot. Furthermore these wider spaces would make it much easier to use the equipment as it would allow us more space to operate allowing us to execute the shots to a higher standard.

G324: Rough Cut 3 Feedback Analysis

We were really happy with the feedback we received for our 3rd rough cut because we had put in a lot of effort to try and get it all to work and fit some more shots in. We were very happy with all of the positive feedback that we received. With the negative feedback we know how we are going to solve the problems that were mentioned in the feedback and the fixes will be incorporated into the final cut.

The first thing that was pointed out to us was that the camera was shaky in some shots. We will rectify this by re-filming the shots that are shaky.

The second thing that was brought up  was that the TV should actually turn on. We will try and experiment with this and see how it looks. We may implement it or we may not.

The third thing that was mentioned was that some people though that the flashback at the end should have been sped up. We will experiment with this and so how it goes. It was also mentioned to us that we should use some more, shorter shots in our flashback sequence at the end. We will be going out to re-film some shots and whilst we are doing this we will film some additional shots to go into this sequence allowing the others to become shorter.

The forth thing that was pointed out was that some shots are out of focus. We will rectify this by re-filming the shots that are out of focus.

The fifth thing that was pointed out was that some shots are too long. We will fix this by filming some additional shots and re-filming the shots that are too long.

The sixth issue that was pointed out was that the gaps with no footage need to be filled. We know this and we are going to have to re-film this missing footage as it has not transferred across to the editing software.
The tenth thing that was brought up was that it is unclear why the man is climbing through the window. We will make this clearer by adding a shot of the woman locking the door.

The final thing that was mentioned was that some of the shots are a bit wobbly. We will be going out to re-film these shots to fix the problem.

Music Video: Rough Cut 3 Feedback

We have received some more feedback on our music video from target audience members, although this time it is for our rough cut 3, the positives and negatives of rough cut 3 are;

Positives:
  • Lip Syncing is really good
  • Visuals and music work really well
  • Good variety of shots
  • Nice effects on video
  • Good match on action
  • Song choice is really good
  • Good transitions and cuts (especially tv one)
  • Performance shots outside are great
  • Nice colour effects on argument at the end
  • Good zoom at start
  • Good OTS
Negatives:
  • Camera shaky sometimes
  • TV should turn on
  • Speed up the flashback at the end
  • Some out of focus shots
  • Needs to be finished
  • Some shots a little too long
  • Indoor shots aren't brilliant
  • Some shots need to be added in
At the moment the positives are now outweighing the negatives which is good, we hope to correct the all of the negatives and have virtually no negative comments by the final cut.

Music Video: Rough Cut 3

This is our third rough cut for our music video. It has been nearly fully edited now and it is really starting to look like what we hoped it would look like. The editing is a lot better in this cut and the lip syncing is very good. We did use a transition; the into-television transition at 2:12. We are re filming our shots soon and they will be clearer and will make the narrative easier to follow. I think that the storyline is a lot clearer now because before the feedback was that some of the audience didn't understand the narrative and more of them said they did now. This rough cut is near completion, we just need to add in the re filmed shots/the missing shots and a few more transitions and that will be the final cut.

Plan for Magazine Advertisement

For our magazine advert we were making a decision between either using the same image from the digipak for the magazine advert, or using an image with a similar design; this design would be using the same colour scheme as the digipak (CMYK). We decided that we would use the background image for the magazine advertisement and the background will be from Idea 1 based on feedback.

Our digipak ideas were between the two images shown below:

Idea 1:

Idea 2:

What we have chosen to use for our Magazine Advertisement:

We ended up deciding to choose Idea 1 because it had a good audience feedback and we liked the first idea and thought it fitted the right sort of feel and the idea going forward for our eventual products. We are going to use the background off of the the Digipak for the background of our Magazine Advertisement so we thought we would keep the products consistent and flow nicely, this therefore keeps synergy across our products.

Music Video: Rough Cut 2 Feedback Analysis (Connor and Jack)

After receiving the feedback, we had a look through what we had been given and made plans to act upon. There were some pieces of feedback that were either similar or the same as what others had said, suggesting that if it was a mistake, then it was quite prominent and so needed to be changed fast. Some of this trended feedback included:

  • Shaky camera near end
  • TV should turn on
  • Need to add in some shots
  • Some shots too long
  • Bad quality in some shots

These are the main one that we have taken on board and have started to rectify. One shot in particular is being dealt with so that we can put it in as soon as possible; the shot of the 'past and present crossing'.

Research into Music Videos by Chosen Artist

The problem with this is that Stan SB doesn't have any music videos. So instead we have chosen to look at music videos by other artists within the same genre. We think that this is the best thing we can do because he doesn't have any videos.

Time - Chase and Status

This is a very down to earth music video that portrays an important message and that is why I like it. It is also similar to what we want to produce in a way as we want to show an argument going on between a couple but ours will not feature any domestic violence. From a technical aspect this is also a very good, when the tempo increases during the chorus the cuts are to the beat of the music. The mise in some shots, such as the one of the man in the cell is excellent. This shot has been filmed with a wide angle lens to make his surroundings stand out to make him look smaller in the frame to make him look more isolated, which is how we see him as a result of his actions.

Me and You - Nero

This music video from Nero called "Me and You" is really good in my opinion, this is because it mixes real life with a video game and that is a cool concept. I like how the editing has been done, I think that it goes with the video and song well. The camera shots and angles make this music video feel really realistic at the beginning and you wouldn't expect it to then go into a video game. I also didn't expect this music video to show parts of a video game but it does and that makes this music video feel modern and perhaps futuristic.

There are quite a few shots in this music video (around 160), this is a very respectable amount for a music video in this genre although I did expect the shots to be edited along with the song so when there is a beat there is a cut but other than that, I think this music video is a good one to take some ideas from for our music video.

Witchcraft - Pendulum

This music video, along with a large amount of other Pendulum videos (such as Watercolour), is largely reliant on the editing capabilities used in post production. A large amount of CGI and green screen used to create a lot of the images, such as the tower of blocks being built/rebuilt at 1:55.
As for the use of the camera, there are not many stable shots used in this video; most of them are created by shaking the camera while recording (however may have also been done during the editing stage).

There are numerous shots of the band playing in a near pitch-black environment, possibly used to outline band, however the lighting used in these shots does not always allow you to see them completely; sometimes they look more like silhouettes.

Final Costumes

Man

Black coat:

He wore a black coat as for the majority of the music video he is viewed as the antagonist. Black is seen as a dark and sinister colour. it is the colour which is stereotypically seen being worn by an antagonist in a film.

White T shirt:

He was wearing a white shirt in parts of the music video when we didn't have much of a gauge for his actions so wt these points we see him as an innocent character. This feeling if further reinforced when we see him wearing the T-shirt towards the end of the video.

Dark blue or black jeans:

He wore dark blue jeans to contrast to the woman's light blue jeans to symbolise their contrasting opinions. He also wore these jeans because he is viewed as the antagonist as his behaviour is for the majority of the spectrum compared to the woman's behaviour. Dark blue, like black, is a colour which represents power, something all antagonists seek to gain.

Trainers:

He wore trainers to represent his down to earth straight thinking attitude. These trainers will also be dark in colour to further reinforce the connotations of the colours of the majority of the clothes he is wearing.

Woman

White top:
She wore a white top as white is associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity. These are the characteristics of the woman that we see in the music video as we see here as the victim throughout the video who only has one goal within the music video which is to mend what goes wrong in the video, as this is the nature of her character.

Light blue Jeans:

She wore light blue jeans which were torn at the knees as light blue is associated with healing, understanding and softness. These are also characteristics of the woman as her understanding compels her to mend what goes wrong in the video, as this is the nature of her character whilst the tears are there to reinforce the fact that she is the victim.

Music Video: Rough Cut 2

This is our second rough cut for our music video. It has been slightly edited now and it is starting to look like what we hoped it would look like. The editing that has been done is cutting the clips we took to fit the song, the lip syncing has been matched pretty well too in this rough cut. We did however use a transition; the most obvious of was the one that was the into-television transition at 2:12. We are also still planning on re-filming some of the shots. E.g. we are going to film a shot of Amy locking the door so that the window-climbing shot is more justified and the storyline is a lot clearer because with some audience feedback that we got, some of them said that they didn't understand the storyline/narrative.

Music Video: Rough Cut 1 Feedback Analysis

We were pleased with the feedback we got for our 1st rough cut as it was nothing short of what we expected. We were very happy with all of the positive feedback that we received. As for the negative feedback we already have an idea of how we are going to rectify the problems that we had brought up.

The first negative point that was brought up was that some of the lip syncing was a bit off. We will fix this by going back and adjusting the timings of the clips so the lip-syncing is in time and we will also be re-filming some out of time shots.

The next thing that was picked up on was that the extreme close up of the mouth lip syncing the words "do it up now" was blurry. We will fit this by re-filming this shot.

Another thing that was picked up on was that some shots repeat. The reason for this is because they're part of a flashback sequence. However we will add some visual effects to distinguish this.

The fourth thing that was brought up was that the people who viewed our music video is that some thought that the TV should actually turn on. We will experiment with this and see how it looks.

The next thing that was pointed out to us was that the camera was shaky in some shots. We will rectify this by re-filming the shots that are shaky.

The sixth thing that was pointed out was that some shots are out of focus. We will rectify this by re-filming the shots that are out of focus.

The next thing that was pointed out was that some shots are too long. We will fix this by filming some additional shots and re-filming the shots that are too long.

Another thing that was brought up was that the SRS shot was weird. There is no SRS in our music video but we think this is referring to the point where the man and woman are looking at each other up and down the stairs. We fill sort out this confusion by shortening the sequence where they are moving down the stairs and adding an extra shot of jack reaching the bottom of the stairs and turning around.

The next issue that was pointed out was that the gaps with no footage need to be filled. We know this and we are going to have to re-film this missing footage as it has not transferred across to the editing software.

The tenth thing that was brought up was that it is unclear why the man is climbing through the window. We will make this clearer by adding a shot of the woman locking the door.

Another thing that was highlighted was that the start it well polished but the quality falls away at the end. We will go back and improve the ending by adding effects, colour corrections, improving the timings and re-filming shaky shots.

Another thing that was pointed out was that some colour corrections are needed. We will fix this by going back and adding these colour collections.

It was also pointed out that it is not complete. The only way this can be fixed is by completing it, so that’s what we will do.

It was also highlighted that we should have used a wider variety of shots. We will be going out to re-film some shots and whilst we are doing this we will film some additional shots.

The repetition could be confusing; this was another thing that was pointed out to us. We will use a collection of effects to try and distinguish different time periods to make the repetition less confusing.

It was also mentioned to us that we should use more, shorter shots in our flashback sequence at the end. We will be going out to re-film some shots and whilst we are doing this we will film some additional shots to go into this sequence allowing the others to become shorter.

Another thing that was brought up was that the chorus was too repetitive. We will be going out to re-film some shots and whilst we are doing this we will film some additional shots in different locations to make this less repetitive.

We also need to add in our names and candidate numbers at the start. That is something that can be done easily so we shall do that.

The final thing that was mentioned was that some of the tracking/handheld shots are wobbly. We will be going out to re-film these shots to fix the problem.

Extra Research: Best Music Videos of 2013 and Most Viewed Music Videos 2013

YouTube Most Viewed Music Videos (UK - 2013):

1. Psy - Gentleman

2. Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball

3. Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop

4. Ylvis - What Does The Fox Say?

From what I have found, these music videos are the most viewed in 2013. Psy - Gentleman is at the top, this isn't surprising after his recent success of Gangnam Style which took the world by storm in 2012.

Both the Miley Cyrus videos came next, these also weren't a surprise because of her controversial music videos, she is being portrayed in a completely different way than the way everyone saw her in her roles in Disney programmes. There were a lot of articles and lots of debating about what Miley might do next.

Ylvis was the next in most viewed on YouTube in 2013, as the rest of them this really isn't a surprise. Ylvis is a singer/songwriter that writes and performs peculiar songs for the entertainment of others but they still have a meaning behind them. His song, What does the fox say, was a huge hit in 2013, I think the reason why this song was so popular is because "What does a fox actually say?" and this song was meant to be funny but also factual, that's why it was so popular.

Music Videos for Inspiration

A music video that we have taken some inspiration from is Time by Chase and Status. This is because it has some really good shots in it, the narrative is very similar to what we are thinking about doing and it is a relatively medium difficulty video yet effective music video. The narrative is about a man and a woman who are having a troublesome relationship, the man keeps beating up the woman but then then they are happy at some points then it goes back to the woman beating the woman again and one of the children reacts and calls the police and the man goes into jail. This music video was made in this way because it is for Refuge for women and children, against domestic violence as shown at the end of the video below (3:42).

This music video from Chase and Status has areas in it that we think we will try to implement into our own music video because they are creative, this song mixes in with what we were thinking and this is one of our main music videos that we are basing our ideas from for our chosen song "Flat Foot Face" by Stan SB as a Drum and Bass artist.

Relates to Todorov - Robbie Williams - She's The One

The reason why I have chosen this music video is because it incorporates all of the stages of TODOROV's theory, there are five stages, these stages are;
  1. A state of equilibrium at the outset,
  2. A disruption of the equilibrium by some action,
  3. A recognition that there has been a disruption,
  4. An attempt to repair the disruption and
  5. A reinstatement of the equilibrium.
At the beginning of the music video there is a state of equilibrium, this is because at the beginning the scenes are calm and happy. Then the disruption happens when the ice skater hurts his leg, Robbie Williams and the girl ice skater then run over to the mans aid - this is where the recognition of the disruption is. After that, Robbie then jumps in to the rescue and skates with the girl skater in the competition  and this is the attempt to repair the disruption that has happened. And finally there is a reinstatement of the equilibrium where they win the skating competition and the hurt skater comes over to celebrate with them.

Music Video: Rough Cut 1

Rough Cut 1

This is our first rough cut for our music video. It is a very basic version of what hope our video to look like. Most of the editing has been simply cutting the clips we took to fit the song and then placing them so that they match up to our storyboard. We did however use some other editing techniques and transition; the most obvious of which would be the into-television transition at 2:12. As This is our first rough cut, some of the clips are not completely in sync with the song, however these are aspect that we are currently rectifying in our post production phase. We are also planning on re-filming some of the shots. For example, we are going to film a shot of Amy locking the door so that the window-climbing shot is more justified (allows it to flow).

Final Props

This is a list of our final props and the reasons why we chose these:

Glass Vase (No Flowers)

We decided to use a glass vase from a charity shop instead of lamp. There are  multiple reasons for this:
We figured that the vase would be much easier to break than the lamp. This would therefore help the filming process run smoother.
The lamp would have been more expensive and possibly out of our planned budget.

Crème Sofa

We decided to use the crème sofa as we believed that the colour worked well to make it seem like part of the location; we though that a darker coloured sofa would not fit well and make the video seem unplanned.

Television

As the television was a relatively large part of our storyline, it was essential to have this in the same room as the sofa. Therefore, we used a flat screen Sony television as it was easily manoeuvrable so it allowed us to place it at the right point in the room to match our storyboard. It was also useful as it was not too large, making the framing slightly easier for us.

Remote Control

This was couple with the television and served only as a purpose for promoting the mise in our music video.

Location Scouting

In our locations scouting we need to get a few locations scouted to make sure we have a variety of locations that we can possibly use.

Connor Nagle Location Scout:

The first location that we thought about is a house in Chelmsford, this house is in a little village which we thought would be quite a good setting for our music video.

Front door from inside (this door would be used when man is exiting the house)

Window next to door inside (this window would be used for the man to enter through)

Banister (this is for when the man and woman are walking downstairs)

Stairs looking upwards (this is where the woman is looking down the stairs at the man)

Stairs looking downwards (this is where the man is looking up the stairs at the woman)

Landing (this is where the man and woman would walk through when having an argument)

Bedroom (this would be used where the man and woman have a little fight and man slams door)

Sofa (this would be used when the man is sitting down watching the TV)

Television (this is what would be used as the TV)

Window from outside near front door (this is an outside shot of where the man would enter through)

Outside of front door (this is an outside shot of where the man would exit from)

Driveway (one way) (this is a shot from the driveway towards the road where the man would walk)

Driveway (other way) (this is another shot of the driveway where the man would walk back in from)

Hallway (one way) (this is where the man would walk out to the door and exit the house)

Hallway (other way) (this is next to the window that the man would enter through and walk down)

Jack Fanchette Location Scout

Hallway (man walks past the woman and drops coat)

Stairs (man and woman stare angrily at each other)

Top of the stairs (arguing when the vase breaks)

Top of stairs (different angle)

Bedroom (where the argument starts)

Lounge (man turns on television/argument is resolved

Possible hall (man walking past woman and dropping his coat)
